Eat less meat on Mondays (or any day)

Eating less meat can help stop global warming, or at least slow it down -- because globally, livestock farming is responsible for nearly 20% of the greenhouse gas pollution caused by human activities. That is a full FIFTH of anthropogenic greenhouse gases.

For omnivores accustomed to making meat the centerpiece of a meal, this might be a challenge. So let's pledge to eat less meat at least one day a week, and help each other figure out how to do it deliciously. I'll be blogging about it regularly on the Stop Global Warming blog, in a series called Less-Meat Mondays.

Have a great less-meat recipe that you'd like share with the world? Send me the info and a photo, or a link to where you're blogging it, at emily -AT- change -DOT- org.

This is an easy pledge.  No meat or fish for me ever.  I ask people if they know what happens to their meat before it ends up on their plate.  This is how I describe it to them - "This animal lies on concrete; no space to turn sideways. Never see the sun or even the moon.  It can not nurse its own babies in comfort and can not play in the meadow and enjoy life in general.  Along comes a human and leads it to the final post of horror.  The animal smells death and walks in river of blood.  The next blow is final and the animals dies too, maybe slowely while its skin is ripped off it.  Then to make it more spectacular, this animal is cut into pieces.  Still it is not enough damage and "fun" for the human.  The human takes the pieces and burn it on the stove.  No satistaction yet? - Those pieces of meat goes into your mouth ..................... is this dignity towards any animal?

For those used to/with an affinity for the western diet, why not try the meat alternatives readily available in supermarkets and health-focused businesses, such as (but not limited to) Morning Star Farms and Boca?  You may be surprised how much like "the real thing" (and better, actually, because they don't have the fat, cholesterol, problems with digestibility, and rancid aftertaste/smell of animal flesh) they are!  The possibilities in recipes are limited only to your imagination.  Try some today!

How about not eating meat EVERY day of the week? I;ve been a vegetarian since age 10 and a vegan for the past 3 years. I've never felt better. Plus, I'm saving the environment and the lives of innocent animals.

Eating meat is barbaric and frankly primitive. EVOLVE.

    Help fight world hunger

    http://animalrights.change.org/actions/view/help_fight_world_hunger_2#

If you want to stop 1 billion people from going hungry each day; If you want to stop the needless deaths taking place every 3.6 seconds due to starvation then a vegetarian lifestyle is the solution to help solve world hunger.  World hunger stems from the inefficient use of resources used for animal agriculture.

Grain currently fed to livestock is enough to feed 2 billion people. Compassion in World Farming, "[c]rops that could be used to feed the hungry are instead being used to fatten animals raised for food." It takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce just 1 pound of edible animal flesh.

Indeed, what we eat does affect the world.   The consumption of animal meat is responsible for the lack of resources necessary to eradicate world hunger.

My boyfriend and I recently moved into a new apartment, living together for the first time. I went on a recipe-copying rampage for a month before the move and found some great ones that we're going to try and if we like them, learn to make them sustainably. But the meatless pledge is something we've talked about and have decided to give it a go. A great way to do it is ceral for breakfast, a salad for lunch and some sort of pasta dish for dinner. It seems to work best for us. =)
